How to Crochet a Bag?

There are several different ways to crochet a bag, all of which are pretty simple but use different techniques.

When it comes to the design of the bag, these are the four most common construction techniques that crocheters typically use.

Basic Rectangle Fold

Beginners usually use this technique as it requires very minimal effort when it comes to putting their bags together.

This technique involves simply crocheting a large rectangle panel and then folding it into either two or three parts (depending on if the bag has a base or is more of an envelope style), then sewn together at the sides. Handles are then put at the side where it is sewn, or you can just simply leave them as it is.

A button or zipper can be sewn into the bag to close it, or if the rectangle is long enough you can use part of it as a flap.

Flat Base, Round Body

With this technique, you crochet the base first, whether it’s a rectangle, square, oval, or circle. To build the body of the bag, you work in rounds from the base up.

Totes and drawstring backpacks are usually constructed this way.

Two Panels and a Gusset

This construction technique is another one that is popular for beginners. You stitch front and back panels and a long, narrow strip that goes between the two to create the sides and the bottom (and sometimes the straps, too) of the bag.

Patchwork Method

From the name itself, it’s just simply a bunch of small crochet pieces sewn together to create a larger fabric that can be formed into a bag. This is commonly done with granny squares but you can use other kinds of squares, or even hexagons or other shapes.

Tips for Crocheting Bags and Purses

Crocheting bags and purses is easy if you know a few simple techniques. Here are some tips to help you.

Visualize the Bag Design

You must know what kind of bag you want to crochet before you start. Identifying the bag’s purpose will help you choose the design you want.

If the bag you want is for school, then a backpack or tote bag is a good option. If it’s for a beach outing or family event, then a tote or crossbody is perfect.

Use the Right Yarn

Any type of yarn can be used to crochet a bag. However, there are things that you need to consider when using specific yarns.

The best fibers to use are linen or cotton yarns, especially if you use them to carry books or any other heavy items. These yarns don’t stretch too much. If you rather prefer a different yarn other than linen or cotton, you can try 100% wool or acrylic yarns. More on yarn with specific recommendations below!

Choose the Right Crochet Hook

Most yarn will have recommended hook size on the label, and it is best if you stick to the recommended hook size on the yarn or the crochet project you are working on.

If you are designing your own bag, use a hook that’s recommended for the weight of yarn you are using, but make sure your stitches aren’t too loose so things don’t fall out of your bag (or you can line it when you’re done; see below).

Always Make a Test Swatch

It’s always a good idea to make a swatch before starting any crochet project so that your project will come out the expected size. Because bags don’t have to be exact, you can probably get away without swatching on simple projects but it is helpful to know how big the holes between the stitches will be so you can combat that.

Consider Adding a Lining

Adding a cloth lining makes a huge difference when it comes to the quality and durability of your bag. It also adds a professional look and it will ensure that all things inside the bag are safe, especially the small things.

Although it is not necessary to line the bag if you use a tight stitch, it does help give the bag more stability and keeps the things inside the bag from snagging the yarn.

What Is the Best Crochet Stitch for a Bag?

Whether you’re designing a bag yourself or considering different crochet bags and purses patterns, it can be daunting to decide what kind of stitch you want to use.

Here are some of our favorite crochet stitches for bags.

Single Crochet Stitch

Single Crochet Stitch

One of the basic crochet stitches is single crochet. This stitch creates a compact crochet fabric which makes it perfect for a crochet bag. Because of the easy nature of the stitch, this is one of the most popular stitches to use for bags.

Bobble on Post Stitch

Bobble on Post Stitch

If you want a bag with a lot of fun texture, this is a great stitch to try.

Bobble on post stitch is a customizable pattern of bobbles and double crochet (dc) stitches alternating with rows of plain double crochet stitches.

Diamond Mesh Stitch

Diamond Mesh Stitch

Diamond mesh stitch is a stitch that has a fishnet look to it which makes it great for a market bag, grocery bag, or beach bag. This stitch is worked in multiple of 4 plus 1.

Herringbone Crochet Stitch

Herringbone Crochet Stitch

Another fun way to add texture to your bag, herringbone crochet stitch is an advanced beginner stitch that has a textured effect to it. Working with single crochet stitches, you’ll be able to create a dense stitch that is great for a crochet bag.

Alpine Stitch

Alpine Stitch

Alpine stitch is a four-row repeat pattern. This stitch creates an amazingly beautiful, textured diamond shape pattern and a flat solid pattern on the other side which makes it a great stitch to use for bags.

Thermal Stitch

Thermal Stitch

Considered one of the thickest and sturdiest crochet stitches, the thermal stitch is an immensely strong stitch for bag straps. This is a variation of a simple single crochet stitch where instead of going through the two loops, you’ll go through the back loop of the previous row and current row.

If you want to learn more about crochet stitches you can use on bags or anything else you like, check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library. It includes written instructions and video tutorials for 45 different crochet stitch patterns.

Best Yarns for Crochet Bags

As mentioned above, we love cotton yarn for most crochet bag patterns. But there are other things you should consider when shopping for yarn for bags and purses:

  • Consistent color through the skein (unless it’s a multicolored or gradient yarn)
  • Consistent thickness/gauge
  • A firm twist in the yarn
  • Strong and springy yarn that will hold the weight of items in the bag and spring back when emptied

Here are a few of our favorite yarn choices for crocheting bags.

Thank you for the great selection to choose from. I have seen some of these patterns before but it’s wonderful to have so many to choose from in one place!
