Assembly:

Arrange granny squares, with right sides facing down, in two sets (one for front and one for back), according to assembly diagram below.

For each set, you should have a T-shape. The 2 top rows have 7 (8) squares each, and 2 bottom rows have 3 (4) squares each.

Join the squares where they meet as follows:

Holding two squares with right sides together and working through both layers, join white with sl st in the first ch-3 corner sp, sl st in each st and each sp across to the next corner. You may find it easiest to work all the horizontal seams first, and then all the vertical seams.

Once both sets of squares (front and back) are joined, lay them together with right sides facing. Begin at the bottom corner of the second row of squares, and join the bottom of the sleeve and the sides with sl sts in the same manner as you joined the squares.

Repeat on the other side/sleeve.

Working across the top, join 3 squares on each side, leaving the center 2 squares (12 inches) open for the neck.

Tassels

For each tassel:

Wrap white yarn around the cardboard piece 10 times. Slide an 8-inch strand of white yarn under one edge of the wrapped yarn and tie a knot. Cut through all layers of yarn at the other end. You should now have 6-inch strands of yarn, folded in half to form a 3-inch bundle, with the knot at the top. Tie a 10-inch strand of white yarn around the bundle, about ½ inch below the knot. Wrap this around and tie it a few times, then run it up through the top of the tassel. Use this end to sew the tassel onto the sweater.

Attach 2 tassels to each square, evenly spaced along hem of sweater.

This is sooooo cleaver! I love it. Maybe I’ll try my hand at making these flower motifs. We were talking about Granny Squares at our Needles in the Stacks library stitching group. I’ll have to share this with them. Thanks for sharing!
