That’s why I’m so excited to share this Fair Isle Crochet Hat Pattern designed by our fabulous guest designer, Tori Bateman.

I love fair isle patterns and am happy to see them popping up all over the place.

Fair isle crochet involves creating colored designs and shapes in the background of your project. It’s a very savvy crochet technique to learn because you work behind the background to create the shapes vs casting on and off.

The basic crochet stitches are still the same though, so color changing is the trickiest part. With a little practice, you’ll be a pro in no time.

Fair isle in crochet is a relatively new art, as it’s traditionally done in knitting, but it’s such a beloved classic look that easily fits into your cold-weather wardrobe.

I love this crochet hat because the motifs incorporated into the background are simple yet unique. I love pink and white, but you can easily make this hat in any colors you choose!

Super Quick Fair Isle Crochet Beanie Pattern

Skill Level: Easy 

Yarn: Bulky weight yarn 
125 yds main color (A) 
80 yds accent color (B) 

Materials: 
Hook: Size M/13 9mm crochet hook 
Yarn Needle 
Scissors 
Faux Fur Pom Pom (optional) 

Size: 18” circumference (stretches up to 20”), 10” height without pom pom 

Gauge: 
10 hdc x 7 rows = 4” 
9 sts x 8 rows = 4 inches in fair isle pattern with 2 colors together. 

Special Stitches: 

Fair isle single crochet (fisc): Insert hook into indicated st, pull up a loop of A, yo with B, pull through both loops on hook. 

Camel stitch (cs): Hdc into the third loop of indicated stitch. The third loop is located behind the top two loops you would normally work into.

Pattern:

Brim: 

Row 1: With A, make 14 fhdc. (14 sts) 

Rows 2-32: Ch 1, cs in each st across. 

Work should measure about 17” without stretching. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold brim lengthwise and sew short edges together. 

The seam is now the wrong side of your work. Turn work so right side is facing out and the V shape of the stitches is facing up. 

Hat: 

Note: Hat portion is worked with both colors. Fisc stitches use both colors, all other stitches use only color B. 

When working with color B, drop color A at the back of the work until needed again. This will create “floats” of color A across the inside of the hat. 

Working into sides of rows on top edge of brim, join B with sl st in first row after seam. 

Row 1: With B, ch 1, sc in first row, [2 sc in next row, sc in each of the next 3 rows] around, join with sl st to first st. (40 sts) 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [fisc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] 9 times, fisc in next st, sc in each of last 2 sts, join with sl st to first st. (10 fisc, 30 sc) 

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sts, [fisc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] 9 times, fisc in last st, join with sl st to first st. 

Rows 4-11: Repeat rows 2-3 4 times more. 

Row 12: Ch 1, fisc in first st, [sc in next st, sc2tog, fisc in next st] 9 times, sc in next st, sc2tog, join with sl st in first st. (30 sts) 

Cut color A, leaving a tail to weave in later. 

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in first st, (sc2tog, sc in next st) 9 times, sc2tog, join with sl st in first st. (20 sts)

Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog around. (10 sts) 

Row 15: Sc in each st around. 

Fasten off, leaving at least a 6” tail. 

Use tail to sew top of hat closed. 

Weave in all ends 

Attach pom pom (optional)
