Are you ready to get your hooks and yarn out? Let’s start!
Basic Crochet Stitches for Cute Crochet Projects
To start crocheting you need to know the basic crochet stitches and work your way up as you master your skills. These stitches form the basis for a lot of other more complex stitches like bobbles, shells, and more.
Here are the six basic crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Double crochet(dc)
- Treble Crochet (tc)
- Slip Stitch (sl st)
If you’re looking to learn these or many other crochet stitches, our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library has video tutorials and written instructions for 45 different stitches you can use in your cute and whimsical crochet projects.
What To Look for in a Crochet Pattern?
All of these free crochet patterns make super cute, finished objects, but how do you find the right patterns for you? Here are some things to think about:
- Check the level of difficulty indicated in the pattern. Most of the patterns listed in this article showed the level of difficulty, so you don’t need to guess. However, not all patterns out there have that information.
- Review the crochet stitches and skills used in the pattern. Do you already know how to do all these things or is there a tutorial to help?
- Do you have the materials needed to make the project? In a pattern, tools and supplies are listed so you can have them ready before you start.
- Read the pattern. Nothing will tell you if you can do the project or not than reading the entire pattern. This is also very important because it will show you how the project is constructed. Picture instructions or even a video tutorial may be available.
- Do you like it? Of course, we want to make things that we like and will use (or can gift to someone who will use them). If something is trendy but not really to your taste, give that pattern a pass.
What Are Some Popular Things to Crochet?
Of course, there are all sorts of things you can crochet, and just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s something you should make. But if you’re wondering where to start with crochet or just interested in what other people are doing, here are some of the most popular types of projects out there:
- Scarves. Everyone can use a scarf and there are so many fun patterns to choose from. Check out our collection of 30+ easy crochet scarves for beginners.
- Crochet tops. The boho look is always popular, but there are so many other things that you can make in terms of crochet tops, from halter tops and crop tops to sweaters and cardigans
- Amigurumi. These sweet crochet toys are a perennial favorite as there are so many different things to stitch. You can make dolls, food, animals, and so much more in this adorable style.
- Home decor. From coasters to candle holders, throw pillows to afghans, there are so many fun things you can make for your home to show off your style and your love for crochet.
- Crocheted accessories. Everything from bucket hats to earrings, ear warmers and more can be crocheted. These items are quick to stitch and great to make for gifts, too!
Supplies Need When Crocheting
There are a wide variety of types of crochet projects you can make, but for most of them you will need the same handful of supplies:
- Yarn: choose a yarn that is the same as or similar in weight and fiber content to what the pattern calls for.
- Crochet hook: Use the size hook that the pattern calls for. We love having a set of crochet hooks, so you always have the size you need (check out this awesome interchangeable crochet hook set if you’re shopping!)
- Stitch markers: You might not need stitch markers for every project, but they are great to use to mark the first and last stitch of each row if you have trouble keeping your edges even. You’ll need a stitch marker if you’re working in the round to show you where each round ends as well.
- Darning needle: Yarn needles or darning needles are essential for sewing up projects and weaning in ends.
- Scissors: Having a little pair of scissors for snipping yarn ends isn’t essential but it definitely is nice!
Now that you have all the things you need and know the basics that you need to know, you are ready to create the cutest and most adorable crochet projects!
Let’s now get into the patterns!
