Introduction to Simple Baby Hat Crochet Patterns
Are you looking for special simple baby hat crochet patterns? Here are more than 60 ways to dress your baby in warm and elegant hats. These patterns are simple and quick to do. If you can make the basic crochet stitches, you can make one as a baby shower gift or for your use.
Crocheting a baby hat is always fun. A baby hat is an easy crochet project and a lovely way to welcome a newborn into the world.
These crochet patterns for baby hats are great for beginners making hats for the first time. The hats featured here are soft, and warm, and make great baby shower gifts or any other baby party celebrations.
Creating a hat is also a wonderful way to use up a scrap yarn that is laying around. And every baby needs a hat (or several!) to keep them warm. So let’s get stitching!
Why Crochet Baby Hats?
Crochet baby hats are adorable, and simple, and can be made in just a matter of hours. They’re a great project for beginners when made with basic stitches.
These lovely crocheted hats are an excellent idea for a gift, for your own baby, or for a charity knitting project.
How to Crochet a Baby Hat for Beginners?
Making a baby hat is one of the easiest and fastest crochet projects out there, but it helps to understand the basics before you get started. The first thing you need to think about is the different ways a hat can be constructed.
While some hats are worked flat as a rectangle that is then seamed up the side and closed off at the top, the most common methods for crocheting baby hats involve working from the top down or the bottom up.
Top-Down Construction
This type of hat usually begins by creating a magic ring or magic circle. Since the construction starts from the top, increasing the stitches is done to achieve the diameter of the crown.
Once the crown size is achieved, stop increasing and crochet in rounds until your hat is the height you need.
The hat may be finished with ribbing at the bottom or not.
Bottom-Up Construction
Another type of method starts at the brim and works up to the crown by decreasing the stitches.
The brim is often constructed by crocheting a long strip that wraps around the head. After that, the brim is then joined to form a circle. The body of the hat is crocheted onto the brim, working in rounds for the length of the hat. Decreases are worked to shape the crown.
How Do You Size A Crochet Baby Hat?
When sizing baby hats or hats in general, there are three important measurements to keep in mind.
- Circumference: Measure around the baby’s head where you want the hat to sit. It’s customary to subtract an inch from this measure for the actual hat size so that the hat will fit snugly.
- Crown width: The crown width is a measure of the flat circular top of the hat, which you get by dividing the hat circumference or head measurement by 3.14. (For example, the head measurement is 16 inches. 16 divided by 3.14 is equal to 5 inches.)
- Hat height: Measured from the bottom of the brim to the crown, an easy way to guess is to divide the hat circumference by 10 and multiply by 4. (For example, the hat circumference is 16 inches. 16 divided by 10 is equal to 1.6 multiplied by 4 is equal to 6.4 inches.)
If you don’t have a baby handy to take these measurements, you can use a standard sizing chart to decide what size to make. Below is a sample crochet baby hat size chart.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Baby Hat?
Baby hats are very quick to make because they are so small. A basic baby beanie hat with basic crochet stitches will only take at least 30 minutes to an hour.
However, this can definitely change because of several factors: the design, yarn weight, crochet hook size, and how fast you crochet.
While basic beanies are quick to stitch, sun hats or other styles might take more time. Basic crochet stitches will work faster than more complicated stitches. Using heavier yarn will make a project go faster, while thinner yarn takes longer to stitch.
So if you are in a crunch of time for a baby shower, then using a medium weight yarn, bulky or super bulky is the way to go.
If you intend to make your baby girl a crochet hat for your coming summer vacation, then a DK or medium weight yarn is perfect.
And of course the crochet hook size coordinates with the weight of the yarn, but again, the bigger the hook the faster it will be to form the stitches.
Finally, your own skill level and confidence play a role in how quickly you can crochet a baby hat. If your basic skills could use a boost, check out our Crochet Fundamentals course.
