Slip Stitch
The slip stitch (abbreviated sl st) is the smallest of all crochet stitches. It is used to join stitches that are worked in rounds. It can also be used to seam pieces together to form your crop top.
A fabric made of nothing but slip stitches looks a lot like knitting. It's the most basic stitch every crocheter should know and you’ll use it a lot.
Single Crochet Stitch
The single crochet stitch (sc) is one of the basic stitches that a beginner should know. It is probably the first stitch you will learn and it makes a nice, solid fabric, which is great for crop tops so the fabric can’t be seen through.
Single crochet is also sometimes used as an edging stitch on a crochet tank top.

It’s twice as tall as a single crochet and its versatility makes it useful for lots of different projects, especially crochet wearables like crop tops. Tips for Making Crochet Crop Tops
Now that you know some of the basics about crocheting a crop top, here are some things to consider to make your project a success.
Understand Your Skill Level
First thing, you need to know what skill level you are and what patterns will be easiest for you to complete. Because with that, you’ll be able to save so much time and effort. Starting a project out of your capabilities will lead to frustration and then frogging (ripping out the project), or worse, not finishing the project.
In general projects increase in skill level the more shaping, complex stitches, or colorwork is involved, so if the pattern you’re looking at doesn’t indicate a skill level, you can look at the stitches and techniques used to see if you know all of them.
Don’t Skip Swatching
Once you have chosen the pattern you want to make, the next thing to do is to make a gauge swatch out of your yarn of choice, with the recommended hook size, and the stitch that you’ll use in the pattern.
Once you’ve made your swatch, wash it how you plan to wash your finished top and measure it to determine how many stitches per inch you are getting.
If you’re getting more stitches per inch than the pattern calls for, your project will end up too small. Try swatching again with a bigger hook. Likewise, too few stitches per inch will make your project bigger than expected, so you need to use a smaller hook.
This part is important in order to make sure that the crop top you’ll make fits you.
Pay Attention to Measurements
Make sure you measure your body – at least your chest circumference – before you start your project. This is the best way to pick a size that will fit you best. You can always make it longer or shorter as you go but if it doesn’t fit in the chest you’ll end up having to make it again.
As you whip your crop top, make sure to try it on if you can. With this, you’ll be able to check the size as you go. Then if it doesn’t fit you can adjust it before you’ve stitched the whole thing.
