Materials: 

Hook: US 7/ 4.5mm 

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn 
110 [125, 140] yds pink (A) 
135 [155, 175] yds gray (B) 

Tools: 
Scissors 
Yarn needle 
Pom pom or pom pom maker (optional) 

Size: 
Adult small [medium, large] 
Band circumference 16 [18, 20]”, which will stretch to 20 [22, 24]” 

Gauge: 
20 dc x 9 rnds = 4”; 20 blsc x 22 rows = 4”. 

Size modifications: 
For a medium adult size hat, make the brim 99 rows, and the body of the hat will have 9 cables. For a large adult size, make the brim 110 rows, and the body of the hat will have 10 cables. 

A larger hat will require more yarn. 

Special Stitch: 
Cable Cross (worked over 6 sts): Sk next 3 sts, tr in each of the next 3 sts, working in front of sts just made, tr in each of the 3 skipped sts. 

PATTERN:

Brim: 

Row 1: With A, ch 13, sc into the 2nd st from the hook, and each st across, turn. (12 sts) 

Row 2: Ch 1, blsc into the first st and each st across, turn. 

Repeat last row 86 [97, 108] times more for a total of 88 [99, 110] rows. 

Edging rnd: Working in sides of rows along the long edge of the brim, sc into the side of each row, join with sl st in top of first st. (88 [99, 110] sc) 

Change to B and cut A, leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Cabled section: 

Rnd 1: With B, ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), dc in each of the next 4 sts, cable cross (see Special Stitch), *dc into each of the next 5 sts, cable cross, repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of first st. (40 [45, 50] dc, 8 [9, 10] cable crosses) 

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc into each of the next 4 sts, fpdc around each of the next 6 sts, *dc into each of the next 5 sts, fpdc around each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of first st. (88 [99, 110] sts) 

Rnds 3-12: Repeat rnds 1-2 5 times more. 

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Finishing: 

Using long tail of B, sew through all the stitches around the top of the hat and pull tightly to cinch top of hat closed. Weave in end securely. 

Make a pom pom with pom pom maker and color A (or use a store bought pom pom instead). Attach pom pom to top of hat. 

On wrong side, and using long tail of A, sew short edges of brim together. 

Weave in all ends.

There aren’t many crochet hat patterns for beginners that use cables. They can seem intimidating when you’re just starting out. They don’t have to be.
